Many years ago, whilst conducting a tour in Italy at Mount Vesuvius, I saw that our hosts had arranged lunch on camping tables outside in the sunshine and, clever clogs as I am, I remarked: "Vedo che mangiamo al fresco." This was met with quizzical looks, and then laughter. "No, no, no," came the reply, "Mangiamo al'aperto." We were to eat "in the open-air."

So, I asked, what does "al fresco" mean? Well, came the reply, it sounds as if you want your lunch whilst sitting in the refrigerator. It means "in the cold."
