The claustrophobic nerves prickle, under pressure overhead. Walls surrounding, encircling, constricting. Perceived darkness excites this dread. The light finally extinguished, undulate the flagstone path, steadying with outreached touch. Look. The last hands who felt these tiles were the ones who placed them.
These photos were taken in London under the river Thames. The colour image is in the tunnel that runs from Greenwich to The Isle of Dogs. The other is in the tunnel between Woolwich and North Woolwich. They are both amazing pieces of Victorian engineering but can be as spooky as hell when quiet and given they are both open 24 hours you can imagine how they feel at night. The colour image was taken with a Pentax ME Super whilst the black and white, was with a Holga 120GFN, both in 2009.
